Historic Preservation

accelerate your project workflow

in a variety of ways with 3d laser scanning:
Reality capture plays a crucial role in historic preservation by creating accurate, high-resolution digital records of cultural landmarks and historical sites. As a premium service provider, ToPa 3D uses advanced technologies like 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, and drone mapping to document intricate architectural details and structural conditions with precision. This comprehensive digital documentation not only supports restoration efforts by providing detailed data for architects and conservators but also ensures that these culturally significant sites are preserved for future generations, even if the physical structures face degradation or damage over time. With ToPa 3D, you can trust that every detail is captured with the highest level of accuracy and care.

Reality Capture for Historically-Minded Organizations

Reality capture is widely used by a variety of organizations committed to preserving cultural heritage and historical sites. Non-profits focused on conservation, such as historical societies and heritage preservation organizations, often utilize reality capture to digitally document and protect landmarks, ensuring their survival for educational and cultural purposes. Universities and academic institutions also leverage this technology for research, historical analysis, and the development of educational programs, providing students and researchers with detailed, interactive digital models of historical sites. Additionally, government agencies, museums, and cultural heritage organizations rely on reality capture for restoration projects, creating accurate records that help in both maintenance and public engagement. By providing highly accurate data, reality capture supports these diverse groups in preserving the past while making it accessible to a broader audience.

Working with ToPa 3D

  precision

CAPTURE EVERY DETAIL WITH CONFIDENCE

Reality Capture, to include 360 photos, 3D laser scanning, and drone mapping, collects millions of data points to create detailed, accurate models of any space. This precision ensures that measurements are exact, reducing errors and rework in planning and construction.

EFFICIENCY

STREAMLINE PROJECT WORKFLOWS AND CUT COSTS

By quickly capturing comprehensive site data that would typically take weeks or months using hand-surveying methods, Reality Capture saves valuable time and labor. Faster data collection and precise planning help keep projects on schedule and minimize costly delays for feasibility studies, retrofits, remodels, and preservation for posterity.

  COLLAB

MAKE BETTER DECISIONS WITH CLEAR, VISUAL DATA

Reality Capture data produces highly visual, shareable models that integrate into web viewers and other sharable mediums such as CAD/BIM and other viewing or design software. This makes it simpler for teams to visualize, communicate, and make informed decisions throughout every project phase.

Helping you

capture, interpret & utilize your data

At ToPa 3D, our passion for historic preservation runs deep. In fact, reality capture for historical sites was the very foundation of our company in its early years. We started by digitally documenting historic landmarks, ensuring their legacy could be preserved for future generations. Over time, this passion has guided us to work with historically minded groups, non-profits, and preservation organizations, taking great care to understand their needs and priorities. Whether through 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, or drone mapping, we approach each project thoughtfully and with the utmost respect, creating highly accurate digital records that maintain the integrity of these treasured sites. Preserving history isn’t just a service for us; it’s part of who we are.

Case study

Capturing Noah's Ark - Mt. Ararat, Turkey

In October 2019, ToPa 3D was contracted to 3D capture the infamous “Noah’s Ark” site near the top of Mt. Ararat in Turkey. This site has been in the news for decades since the first discovery of the boat-shaped rock formation on the slopes of the Turkish mountain range. Historical accounts from several religions talk about a “great flood” several thousand years ago. Perhaps most popular is the famous story of Noah’s endeavor to save human and animal life from extinction.

Perhaps the biggest challenge to this project was the sheer size of the site and the incredibly rugged terrain. With a length of over 300 meters by over 50 meters wide, this site was difficult to traverse with 3D laser scanners, cameras, and a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) unit that had to be dragged up steep rock walls at over 1900 meters altitude.

[ToPa 3D] is fantastic to work with, and brings amazing results to any project. I've experienced [their] knowledge and skill both in my classroom as a guest lecturer - teaching scanning applications to historic preservation students - and in the field working on historic buildings. It's a pleasure to then brainstorm new techniques and interpretations with [ToPa 3D] from the data [they've] acquired.
